A joint venture to produce lighting systems based on GaN LEDs is formed by Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies (Rusnano) /17%/, Onexim Group Ltd. /50%/, and Ural Optical and Mechanical Plant /33%/. To strengthen the JV, Onexim has also acquired for an unknown sum of money 82% of OptoGaN Oy (Helsinki, Finland), a startup founded in 2004 by Russian physicists Vladislav Bugrov, Maxim Odnoblyudov and Alexey Kovsh. In 2007 OptoGaN raised €5M from venture capital investors. OptoGan is developing GaN LEDs and has a research lab at the Helsinki University of Technology and a pilot line and production facilities in Dortmund, Germany.

SAMSUNG erected its first LCD and plasma TV plant at Russia. The plant is located in the Kaluga region and is estimated to produce 1,7M units in 2009 and up to 1,8M in 2011. The total investments to this plant are not less than $137 million.

INTERNATIONAL RECTIFIER in a board of directors letter rejected the unsolicited proposal from VISHAY INTERTECHNOLOGY to acquire all outstanding shares of IR for $1,6 B made on August, 18. The reason was named - it is not "in the best interests of IR and its shareholders".

Yuri Borisov is appointed on the post of deputy-minister of Industry and Trade Ministry of Russian Federation. Mr. Borisov will be responsible for state electronics programms and projects. Before May 2008 Mr. Borisov acted as a deputy cheif of electronics branch of Federal Agency for Industry, which was eliminated during the transformation of "power vertical" after Putin-Medvedev castling.

FLEXTRONICS terminated the purchasing of ELCOTEQ's plant at St.Petersburg and paid ELCOTEQ non-refundable compensation of €1 million in accordance with terms in the transaction agreement. Among the conditions precedent for the closing of this transaction were that the purchaser would obtain the approval of the transaction by the Russian competition authorities.

Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) rejected a plan of Singapore-based FLEXTRONICS to erect a plant for LCD TV manufacturing at St.Petersburg. City's authorities promised to help in the procedure.

INTEL is in talks with the St.Petersburg goverment about a potential investment that may involve manufacturing. This talka are in relation to grounbreaking of FOXCONN factory, which will manufacture Hewlett-Packard PCs for the Russian market.

DIGI-KEY and MESHNETICS announced that the companies have entered into an agreement for the worldwide distribution of MESHNETICS' ZigBee modules, development boards and development tools. MESHNETICS is the first company with roots at Russia, which products are distributed by global distributor.

The new head of "Russian Electronics" holding was named in the beginning of 2008. Vasiliy Marutin, Major-General, ex-chief of Purchasing Department of Russian Defense Ministry in 1998-2004, changed on the post of General Director Mr.Zasipkin, ex-KGB officer, who leaded "Russian Electronics" from 2005. This proves the rising influence of military trends at electronics of Russia.

FUJITSU announced the plans to spin-off its loss-ridden semiconductor unit. Due to restructuring plan few fabs for standard logic, LSI and ASICs according with Akiruno Technology Center will be united till september 2008.

President and CEO of TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Richard Templeton will add the title of chairman in April. The previous chairman Thomas J.Engibous, who turns 55 this month, will leave the company after 32 years at different posts. TI credits Engibous with increasing its share price nearly 5x since he became CEO (1996-2004).

AVNET strengthens its positions at Europe by acquiring AZZURRI TECHNOLOGY. This 10-year-old company employs about 80 people and has annual revenue of $100 million. This is the third acquisition of AVNET at Europe in a last time - ACAL and BETRONIK preceded.
